Taxi apps in Korea: Kakao T, k.ride, Uber and TABA compared

Last checked: 15 October 2026

Kakao T accepts VISA, Mastercard, JCB and AMEX cards issued abroad, and even without a card you can call a regular taxi and pay the driver directly (Kakao T official FAQ, October 2026). Where visitors get stuck is the phone-number SMS check at sign-up. If that fails, k.ride, Uber and TABA don't need a Kakao account.

Kakao T: foreign cards and fees

Kakao T's official FAQ says VISA, MASTER, JCB and AMEX credit and debit cards issued abroad work for its taxi, bike and pet services; prepaid cards don't.

Without a registered card you can still choose "기사님께 직접결제" (pay the driver directly) and pay by card or cash on the in-car terminal. This works for regular calls only; auto-pay taxis and booster calls need a registered card.

TypeCall feeCancel fee
Regular callNoneNone
Blue₩0–5,000 (Daegu/Gyeongbuk ₩0–1,000)₩2,000
Mobeom₩0–5,000₩2,000
VentiNone₩4,000
BlackNone₩5,000

Call fees vary with demand. The cancel fee applies if you cancel more than 1 minute after a driver is assigned. Booster call: Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon, 22:00–03:00, up to ₩4,000 extra, auto-pay only (Kakao T official FAQ).

When the Kakao T SMS code doesn't arrive

Kakao T's official FAQ says that if the verification SMS doesn't arrive, check your spam settings or ask your carrier, and enter the code within 3 minutes. Official pages don't say whether foreign (+81 etc.) numbers are accepted.

Travel sites seoulstart (August 2026) and Wise (October 2025) note that SMS to foreign numbers sometimes fails. If you sign up with your home number, finish the verification at home before you switch to roaming or a Korean eSIM (eSIM and mobile data).

What fans report (not official)

From 2024–2025 posts on Yahoo! Chiebukuro, Hatena and note; not Kakao T's official guidance.

  • They entered the number as +81 without the leading 0.
  • They turned on voice roaming to receive the SMS.
  • They chose the "card issued overseas" option when adding a card.
  • There was a ₩100 check when the card was added.

k.ride, Uber Taxi and TABA

k.ride

Kakao Mobility launched k.ride for foreign visitors in June 2024 in 14 countries including Japan (Korea JoongAng Daily). It runs in English, Chinese and Japanese, translates live with the driver and searches destinations in about 100 languages. The catch: only premium tiers such as Blue, Venti and Black are offered, not the cheapest regular taxi. Every option has a service fee and cancel charge, and fares are reported slightly higher than Kakao T.

Uber Taxi

Uber in Korea dispatches licensed taxis (renamed from UT to Uber Taxi on 29 February 2024, per Trip.com). Busan City announced an agreement with Uber Taxi in August 2025 and said Korean apps rely on Korean carrier ID checks and Korean cards or accounts, which is hard for tourists, while Uber works with the app visitors use at home, with translation.

TABA

Per its App Store listing, TABA partners with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and T-money, signs you up by phone, Google or Apple, and takes seven card brands including JCB and UnionPay.

Getting a taxi after a concert

Fans report (Ameblo, Yahoo! Chiebukuro) that after big shows Kakao T struggles to find a car near the venue, and advise riding the subway a few stops before calling. Last-train times and night buses are in Last trains after concerts.

FAQ
